In the world of laboratory-based research, knowledge or IP means original data, technologies, etc .in other words, know how that is developed at the lab bench. A history of how, when and by whom this knowledge is created is recorded in a lab book which helps defend the originality of the IP if it is patented. It is important that, prior to any form of public disclosure, the claim to ownership of IP is established and protected through patenting. This is a costly and timely process, sometimes taking years to finalize. Publication of research results in scientific journals is usually how IP is first publically disclosed. The research is critiqued by a peer review process and the journal only accepts the best research. The most prestigious international journals for genetic research include Cell, Nature, Science, Nature Genetics, American Journal of Human Genetics.
