CORRINE DARMOND-ZWAIG

Core Facility Technician

Concordia University, B.Sc 1991 Animal Biology
WORK EXPERIENCE:
Laboratory technician: Center for the Study of Host Resistance, Montreal General Hospital Research Institute

CORE FACILITY TECHNICIAN:
Montreal Genome Center

RESEARCH & WORK EXPRERIENCE:
Under Dr. Francine Gervais at the Center for the Study of Host Resistance, I worked as a technician on a murine model for the resistance/susceptibility to Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the bacteria associated with bronchopulmonary infections of cystic fibrosis patients. I was required to do both in vivo and in vitro work.

As part of the genotyping group at the Montreal Genome Center, I have done both whole genome scans and fine mapping projects on such diseases as coronary heart disease, epilepsy, systemic lupus, North American Indian Cirrhosis, cataract, Restless Leg Syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis.

CAREER GOALS:
My choice in career was motivated by a keen interest in physiology. I never cease to be amazed by how each mechanism in the body interacts and is affected by others. I enjoy bench work immensely as well as the lab atmosphere in general. By working in an academic setting, where I can attend seminars and read articles relating to our current projects, I get the sense that my education is continuous.

As a mother of three young children between the ages of one and six, my long-term career goals have somewhat been put on the back burner in recent years. However, I am hoping to resume courses once the youngest of the brood reaches school age.

CAREERS IN SCIENCE:
For those who enjoy the challenges and rewards of a complex puzzle and unraveling the secrets of the human genome through the use of state of the art technologies, the field of genetics is a perfect one for you.
