The Network’s investment in early-stage research projects often results in the creation of intellectual property (IP). This IP has been out-licensed to existing biopharmaceutical companies, or has formed the foundation of new start-up companies. The following is a list of biopharmaceutical companies that have benefited from network IP and management services.

Xenon
Xenon Genetics is a privately owned, genomics-based drug discovery and development company engaged in identifying genes and other drug targets associated with human disease and developing pharmaceutical therapies based on these genetically-derived targets. Xenon’s drug discovery programs are targeted toward the development of therapies for cardiovascular, metabolic and neurological diseases.

Aegera
Aegera Therapeutics is building an integrated world-class biotechnology company focused on signal transduction and apoptosis. Formed by the merger of Apoptogen and Exogen Neurosciences in May 2000, Aegera’s primary therapeutic focus is in apoptosis control: killing cancer cells by inducing apoptosis, rescuing neurons from cell death, and implanting stem cells to restore function. Aegera focuses on cancer and degenerative diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems.

Medigene
MediGene AG, acquired CGDN spin-off company NeuroVir in November 2000. Medigene is a
publicly traded German biopharmaceutical firm with headquarters in Martinsried, Munich, and a subsidiary, MediGene, Inc., in San Diego, California. MediGene combines a broad technology platform with products in pre-clinical and clinical development.

Solutions by Sequence
Solutions by Sequence, Inc. is a private corporation, owned by its founding scientists and the Canadian Genetic Diseases Network, hosted in the Vision Science Research Program by the University Health Network. The company develops diagnostic tests for genetic mutations that lead to disease.

Ellipsis Biotherapeutics
Ellipsis is a privately-owned biotechnology company based in Toronto, Canada. Founded by researchers at Mount Sinai Hospital and the Hospital for Sick Children, Ellipsis is actively pursuing genes involved immunological and inflammatory disease.

Aspreva
Aspreva is a global pharmaceutical company that was created to develop high therapeutic value medicines for the treatment of rare diseases.
