The UBC Bioinformatics Centre (UBiC) is the focal point for bioinformatics activities at the University of British Columbia. The CGDN community was instrumental in securing CFI funds for the bioinformatics infrastructure now used at UBC. UBiC is now ready to offer Bioinformatics Core Facility support to CGDN researchers to aid their bioinformatics research projects and initiatives. CGDN researchers, clinicians, PDFs and students all benefit from access to the web resources developed and maintained at UBiC under the direction of Francis Ouellette, director of the CGDN Bioinformatics core facility.
A number of free resources are available including: bioinformatics.ca at: www.bioinformatics.ca (the home of the ever popular Canadian Bioinformatics Workshop series) as well as the new integrated user support available from UBiC at: www.bioinformatics.ubc.ca/resources. This web resource draws together information for bioinformatics tools including: README files, help files, related publications, online help, as well as access to online versions of many tools. Frequently asked questions (FAQs) and customized tutorials have also been developed as part of this resource. All of these UBiC resources are freely available to all worldwide and do not require user accounts for access. Access to dedicated bioinformatics servers with installed software, the local BLAST server, and the Help Desk is reserved for account holders.
A number of user accounts are available to CGDN researchers and account requests can be filled out online. Through the UBiC Help Desk activities, UBiC account holders have access to a team of bioinformaticians who offer their advice and expertise to bioinformatics related research questions. Specific tool and/or software related trouble-shooting is also offered along with customized tutorial content and an up-to-date frequently asked questions (FAQs) page.
