Gene Researcher for a Week is an excellent opportunity to get Canadian high school students excited about genetics and genetic research. We ask that you provide your student with a primary supervisor in your lab (a post-doc, technician or grad student) that will schedule their time in the lab. However, the students find it very interesting to work with different people in the lab during the week and learn the why's and how's of what each person does.

The students should be provided with simple experiments to do during the week, including cell culture, DNA isolation, protein isolation, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and Western blotting.

A tour of their host research institute or hospital at the beginning of their visit will greatly enhance the student's experience. Also, attending lab meetings is another great way to learn about the processes behind genetic research.
