RESEARCH & WORK EXPERIENCE:
Throughout my training I have participated in genetic research directed towards the understanding of basic cellular processes such as apoptosis (cellular death), growth regulation, cellular transformation, movement, adhesion, and tumor formation. My Ph.D. research has focussed on the role of a tumor suppressor gene, called PTEN, in the progression of cancer. There are common genetic changes that occur in the evolution of a tumor cell from a normal cell. In many different types of sporadically occurring tumors, PTEN is often mutated. Thus, my research, which is aimed at understanding the effects of PTEN mutation, will be important for understanding basic processes of cancer formation and will offer insights into the interplay of the immune system and tumor formation.
CAREER GOALS:
To continue to supervise an active research laboratory involved in genetic disease and human genome studies. To become a full-Professor at the University of Toronto. Eventually to direct a research institute. After completion of my Ph.D. degree, I would like to take my skills and understanding of basic genetics into the field of Bioinformatics. In this day of large-scale genetics and genome sequencing, I am excited to be participating in the revolution occurring in this field of genetic and computational research.
CAREER CHOICE:
I became a genetic researcher largely because of the positive work experience I gained as a part of the co-operative education program at SFU. I have discovered along the way, that being a part of top-level genetic and molecular research program is stimulating, exciting and rewarding.
CAREERS IN SCIENCE:
I would encourage students to pursue careers in science so that they can be privy to this whole New World of knowledge and information that will be come increasingly important to our daily lives and health in the future.
